Le petit souci digestif de Noopy

Noopy's Little Tummy Trouble

My dog had loose stools at night: possible causes and what actually worked with Noopy

There was a tricky period for Noopy: digestive issues that completely turned our nights — and our mornings — upside down.

It started with loose stools, and very quickly settled into an exhausting rhythm:

between midnight and 9am, Noopy needed to go out every 1 to 2 hours.

Nights were broken up by constant wake-ups, and so were the mornings.

The strangest part?

During the day, everything went almost back to normal.

  • either he didn't go at all
  • or very little

On top of that, Noopy seemed fine in himself:

  • he was playing normally
  • he was eating
  • he had all his usual energy

That contrast made me think it was probably intestinal irritation, rather than something more serious.

The first time: I didn't handle it well

It was the first time it had happened… and honestly, I had no idea what to do.

I tried things, I searched for answers, I improvised… but I hadn't found the right approach yet.

Looking back, I realise I was very much fumbling my way through it.

What I did at the time

To help him, I started by giving him nothing but Terra Canis Gentle Meal wet food for three days — a recipe designed for digestive issues.

Then I went back to something very simple:

  • his usual kibble
  • a little rice OR carrot (never both at the same time)

And most importantly:

I cut out all treats and extras to give his digestive system a rest.

How long it lasted

The recovery was gradual and quite slow.

Almost three weeks.

Little by little:

  • the night-time wake-ups became less frequent
  • his stools went back to normal

Until the day Noopy finally slept through the night without needing to go out.

A few months later: same problem, different reaction

A few months later, Noopy had loose stools again.

But this time:

I knew exactly what to do.

The method that actually worked

At the first signs, I put a simple and effective routine in place:

  • no more fatty kibble
  • Gentle Meal wet food in small amounts (around half the usual portion)
  • for 2 to 3 days maximum

Even if he was a little hungry, it gives the digestive system a chance to rest properly and heal.

The supplements I used

Alongside that, I used:

  • Smecta for dogs (Easypill Smectite, recommended by the vet)
  • Purina Proplan Fortiflora (1 sachet per day for a dog of around 5kg)

⚠️ Important: don't give them at the same time

This is a really key point:

Smecta can destroy the good bacteria in Fortiflora

The two work together, but they need to be spaced out.

Here's how I did it:

  • Smecta in the morning around 9am
  • lunch with 1/2 sachet of Fortiflora
  • evening meal around 7pm with Fortiflora
  • Smecta around 11pm

Always around 2 to 3 hours apart.

The result

With this method:

  • loose stools for around 2 days
  • day 3: first almost-normal stools
  • just the end still slightly soft

I kept it up a little longer…

and everything got back on track very quickly.

What I took away from it

This experience taught me something essential:

the less you do, the better it works.

  • simple diet
  • temporarily reduced portions
  • the right supplements
  • and above all: consistency

Good to know

I'm not a vet — I'm simply sharing my experience with Noopy.

If your dog:

  • seems lethargic
  • is vomiting a lot
  • has blood in their stools

please consult a vet.

Conclusion

When a dog's stomach goes off track, it's easy to panic.

But with:

  • simplicity
  • patience
  • and the right instincts

things can get back to normal much faster than you'd think. 🐾
