Noopy Turns His Nose Up at His Bowl

My dog stopped eating his kibble: why he started snubbing his bowl and how I finally sorted it out with Noopy

After a month, Noopy was finally starting to feel at home. Everything was going well — mealtimes had even become a real moment of joy.

And then one day… out of nowhere:

he decided to turn his nose up at his bowl.

Overnight, he no longer wanted his kibble, even though he had loved it just days before.

Naturally, I started asking myself a lot of questions:

  • Does he not like his kibble anymore?
  • Is he sick?
  • Should I change his diet?

And like a lot of people, I made a mistake…

The signs that worried me

In the days that followed, Noopy:

  • sniffed his bowl without eating
  • would only eat from my hand
  • ate only if I offered something better
  • kept playing and sleeping as normal

But most of all:

he would sometimes vomit yellow bile, several days in a row at times — a sign that his stomach was empty.

At that point, I really started to doubt myself.

The mistake I made

Out of worry, I tried to do the right thing:

I gave him wet food.

And without realising it, I created a problem:

Noopy figured out that by waiting… he could get something better.

The result:

  • he refused his kibble
  • waited for something else
  • tested just how far he could push it

What I came to understand

After a bit of research, and mostly by observing his behaviour, I realised that:

it wasn't a kibble problem — it was a well-established fussy habit.

He wasn't sick:

  • he was playing normally
  • he was sleeping well
  • he had plenty of energy

He had simply figured out that he could "negotiate".

The solution I put in place

I decided to completely change my approach:

  • no more treats
  • no more alternatives
  • I put the bowl down → he eats or he doesn't

But most importantly, I used a little trick:

For one week, I switched him back to his old kibble… the kind he liked less.

The result:

He ended up eating, for lack of anything better.

Then I switched back to the good kibble…

which he learned to love all over again.

How long it took

Honestly?

It lasted nearly two months.

Two months of doubt, trial and error, patience…

But in the end, it paid off.

What you should absolutely avoid

  • constantly switching foods
  • offering something else the moment he refuses
  • giving in every time he turns away

Otherwise, your dog will very quickly learn that waiting gets him something better.

My honest take

At first, I was really stressed.

Between the bile vomiting and the fact that he wasn't eating, I didn't know whether it was serious or not.

And at the same time, I didn't want to go to the vet for nothing — especially since aside from that, he kept playing and sleeping as if everything was fine.

Looking back, I understood that:

consistency matters far more than looking for a quick fix.

Good to know

I am not a vet — I'm simply sharing my experience with Noopy.

If your dog:

  • seems lethargic
  • stops eating entirely for several days
  • vomits frequently alongside other symptoms

It's important to consult a vet.

Conclusion

Today, Noopy never makes a fuss about his kibble anymore.

That whole period taught me one thing:

with a clever puppy, patience and consistency always win in the end. 🐾
